There is a model of Jerusalem that I visited, that shows roughly how the city looked in the time of Jesus. Here you can see the rock shaped like a skull outside the city walls (very center).

Taken from on top of the Mount of Olives in front of the Church of Ascension. Note that directly in front - in an exactly straight line is the Eastern Gate, the Holy of Holies, and the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.<br />

All 4 of those points happen to be in a straight line.<br />
